NIOSH B Reading Program

B Readers are NIOSH-certified physicians shown to be proficient in classifying radiographs according to standards set forth in the International Labour Office’s (ILO’s) International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses system.  The NIOSH B Reader program started in 1974, and has contributed to the surveillance of coal miners as well as workers with the potential for other dust-related pneumoconioses.  Training in the ILO system of chest radiograph assessment is offered along with qualifying examination; interested physicians should contact NIOSH or UIC.
